I made two car rental reservations with mode during my visit to New Zealand.
One was at Queenstown from 4/19 to 4/27 and the other was at Auckland from 4/27 to 4/30.
I am not sure what’s mode’s standard SOP to check return car. When we picked up the car on 4/19 at Queenstown, we were told that as long as we return the car at 8:30am, they will send shuttle to take us to the airport immediately. We arrived at 8:20 but could only wait till customer service rep to open the door at 8:30 sharp. He took more than 20 photos of the car, then drive the car to the parking lot (when I thought he was doing a test drive.) Then he returned to the front door where we waited, said he would ask his colleague to take us to the airport. We waited a few more minutes, just to find him chatting with the guy at back door….
We almost missed the deadline to check in luggage if our flight to Auckland was not delayed. I must say the experience was extremely awful!
On the other hand, when we returned the car at Auckland, the Service Rep didn’t take any single photo of the car!
Shuttle Bus from airport to Rental Premises quick and easy. Fast turnaround to get car sorted. Car was great ... drove well... reasonable fuel economy ... no issues at all
The lady on pickup was unhelpful, and looked like she didn’t want to be there. The man on drop off was super lovely. But we wouldn’t use them ever again.

Didn’t tell me there would be a $3000 bond until AFTER the booking was made. So I couldn’t cancel and get money to rebook somewhere else in short notice. Price of car hire with insurance ended up being twice as much as expected, and we were left with no other option but to continue with the booking upon arrival.

Drop off time was not made very clear by the staff in Auckland. We were told to drop off in Wellington by 4pm and therefore not realizing the vehicle had to be dropped off by 12 noon as per the booking paperwork.
Car had a dead battery and cobwebs inside hood. Had an after hour pickup scheduled and paid for. Emergency no went unanswered. Pickup location jump started car. But it died again on reaching hotel. Next day was Sunday. Again no one answered phone. 3rd day a person came and replaced battery at 3pm. Wasted 2.5 days of trip.
Car was pretty old, with 160,000 miles on it. All four tyres were low and had to be pumped up. The paint on the hood and roof was mostly worn off. Mechanically it was fine.
Car was advertised as a "6-person minivan" -- but it was far smaller than I had expected. I would call it a station wagon, not a minivan at all.
I talked with BRC about exchanging it, and they were not interested. They only offered to have me pay 3x as much for a full-size van. They would not allow me to return the car early so I could rent from elsewhere.

Very good car experience, good condition,I booked a gasoline Alphard, and the store gave me a free upgrade to the hybrid Alphard. It’s really great! the car is very new! The interior of the car is so clean it’s unbelievable! Friendly service staff, very enthusiastic and professional. Mobile phone charging cables and mobile phone holders are prepared for us. The procedure for picking up and returning the car is very simple. It is recommended to purchase comprehensive insurance so you don’t have to worry about scratches while driving along the way. I will choose A rentals company next time I come to New Zealand. Highly recommended!
The car was not what I booked, they tried to sell it as an upgrade. Received significant downgrade.
The staff not speaking English as their first language made it difficult for them to understand.
The car we received had clearly been in a crash. With obvious cracks, chips and serious scuffs on the rims.
