This was my first time renting a car abroad, so to be cautious, I chose to pay at the counter. Fortunately, the staff had a good attitude! Picking up the car was smooth overall. However, the waiting time was quite long—regardless of having a reservation, you still need to pick a number onsite and wait in line, which took about an hour before it was my turn. This is why I deducted one point. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the car matched the model I reserved, and it was barely a year old with just 10,000 kilometers on it—lucky me! The driving experience was excellent overall, with ample power and convenient navigation using wireless CarPlay. At the end, I refueled near the airport and returned the car; all I had to do was hand the keys to the staff in the parking garage and sign the confirmation, then I was good to go. Overall, it was a great experience.
The rental company staff were very polite, and the pick-up and drop-off process was relatively smooth. However, at the counter during pick-up, they tried to upsell us on personal insurance, and the final bill at drop-off included an unclear tax charge that needs further discussion.
This is a scam company! At least the store at Rome train station in Italy is a scam! I booked an automatic car in advance and paid in full through the third party. When I arrived an hour late, they said there were no automatic cars left and gave me a manual one instead, claiming it's the same price for the same car group. I only asked for an additional driver but ended up being tricked into buying extra insurance! They made me sign saying that the price was for adding a driver! The car wasn't full of fuel when rented, and neither was it full when returned, yet they charged me for 30 liters of fuel! I refueled in the middle! I prepaid over three thousand through the third party, but eventually the final bill was over seven thousand! They said they upgraded the car model and charged more for it! I will never rent from this company again in my lifetime!
Booked an automatic, but only manual was available at the store. It was more expensive initially, but after a long negotiation, the price matched. The elderly staff were very slow, taking over an hour.
“Decent enough city car, helpful staff, but Ancona train station pick-up location difficult to find.”
About AVIS:8.0/10
I think that cars with automatic transmissions should be more commonly available for the same price. I get it, Italians like manual transmissions, but not all of your foreign customers do.
Please, Avis, use better, larger signs to mark your office at Ancona train station.
I selected a VW UP or similar, got a Fiat Panda FWD. The Panda is a decent enough city car, easy to drive and park and so on. However, it is comically underpowered for hills and highways, even with only me and my bags in it. Great fuel economy though.
