Specifically rented a Jeep Wrangler for stargazing at the Mauna Kea Observatory on the Big Island, but when I arrived to pick it up, I was told that all their Wranglers had been recalled and there were none available. After insisting that I simply needed a vehicle capable of reaching the observatory, they initially gave me a Dodge SUV and asked me to come back before heading to the observatory to swap for a more suitable vehicle. Upon issuing the rental contract, they charged a $200 deposit along with an additional fuel service fee, which they said would be fully refunded if I returned the car with a full tank. Two days later, when I went to swap vehicles, there still weren’t any Wranglers. Instead, they gave me a Ford pickup truck, which came with an uncovered truck bed and no straps for securing luggage, causing my luggage to get wet. Thankfully, I brought my own straps, so the luggage didn’t slide around in the truck bed. During the handover of the truck, I asked a technician how to switch between 4H and 4L gears but was asked for a tip in return. The service at the rental company was average, but the pickup and return processes were efficient and didn’t waste any time. Although I returned the car with a full tank on both occasions, the company still deducted the fuel service fee from my deposit without notifying me. They even charged 10% more than the original fuel service fee indicated on the contract. Fortunately, I kept the receipts from both fuel refills and photos of the fuel gauge at the time of vehicle handover. After returning home, I filed a complaint via the rental platform, and the deducted fees were refunded. Considering the efficiency of their processes for picking up, swapping, and returning vehicles, as well as the successful refund of the fuel fee, I decided not to give a negative review.
Overall, I was very satisfied with the service. At pickup, I just said I have extra insurance covered and I will return with a full tank of gas, and the staff didn't try to upsell anything. I only rented the car for one day to go up the mountain for stargazing, but I should have rented it for a few more days because the small car I got later couldn't handle the green sand beach.
